Kenya is a country where almost everything you buy comes in a plastic bag. To westerners this can seem excessive, though there are practical reasons (much of what you buy is not already packaged). The result is a huge number of waste plastic bags.
The women of Okoa Jahazi have found a use for such bags: they take the bags and crochet the plastic to make baskets! And, while plastic bags are generally thin and easily torn, the resulting baskets are robust and colourful. They are particularly suited to carrying fruit and vegetables.
